Origins of Singing Bowls

The history of Tibetan Singing Bowls is sketchy, as much of it was destroyed when Tibet was occupied by China. in the early 1950s. With differing philosophies and ideals, religious records were lost forever as were the origins of this melodic, meditative sound maker. Luckily, determined research found these tuneful bowls were originally used in ancient, sacred, Tibetan ceremonies by Shamans in the Himalayas and as a food bowl. Collectors of these meditative bowls think they were made around 5000 years ago, during the “Bronze Age, ” crafted out of copper, then brass by Artisans who passed the knowledge down through generations.

‘Nepal appears to be the hub of modern manufacturing, but these bowls were originally hammered into shape, as antique bowls’

The secrets held by Tibetan monks are now a spiritual phenomenon and are sought after for their healing and mysterious resonance. Sound has been recorded as part of creation and did you know it was applied therapeutically by many ancient cultures? These were the Egyptians who chanted sacred, vowel sounds along with the Aboriginal people of Australia whose didgeridoo was a healing tool for broken bones and sickness. Our enlightened ancestors knew the power of sounds especially those produced by voice, vibration, and instruments.

‘Creating the song’

Playing a singing bowl takes practice as you hold the bowl in the palm of your hand, then gently strike it with a wooden mallet. Once the tone rings out, with precision move the mallet around the rim of the bowl creating a succession of inspiring sounds. Hold the mallet firmly against the bowl using your arm to form a rhythm of unique, bell-like tones. These should continue to ring after contact between the mallet and bowl has ceased. Singing bowls are made up of frequencies we can feel and hear, hence their healing and spiritual potential. A variance in what part of the bowl is played and external influences create the tones, these harmonic vessels emit. We know our hearing range is between 20 and 20,000 Hz while the bowl range is around 110 Hz to 600 Hz. Each bowl can resonate differently depending on size, thickness, and shape.

‘Larger bowls offer deeper tones, while one made with a thicker construction is likely to produce higher harmonics’

When a bowl is struck you create a chord exactly as you would playing a guitar. And as notes form a chord, the interplay of sounds can be soothing, This is why singing bowls are ideal for achieving a meditative, state of mind. Feeling and hearing the collaborative dance of notes can bring about positive changes in your body and mind. And why they are used in chakra healing.
